Soma Mama

Soma Mama is worked on the broken drum piece with yarn, beads and beeswax matrix in the same construct as the entire series and shows a Miraculous Mother of the Hindu tradition. Her third eye is illuminated; her aura is rainbow light and vibrating. The same vibrational energy pours from her hands down toward the earth. She stands atop and Amanita muscaria mushroom, which many scholars consider the sacrament Soma of the Rig Veda, the oldest of all Hindu religious writing.

There are two types of thecal images commonly portrayed in much of the world’s religious iconography: the Virgin and the Mother. While Virgin images always have their hands clasped in prayer, Mother images have their arms open. The subliminal vision of veiled females thus portrayed mirror the two thecal aspects of woman. The Miraculous Mother is present in various cultures demonstrating the universality of the archetype. Soma Mama was purchased by Kimberly Goff-Knollenberg and resides in her private collection in Bridge Hampton, NY.
