Saint Francis
and the Magpie

Saint Francis of Assisi is popularly known as patron and protector of animals. On October 4, his feast day, Catholic communities have special ceremonies to bless pets which are brought to church for the occasion. Images of the saint frequently show him surrounded by birds. Cuchama interprets Saint Francis through southwestern themes. The magpie abounds in northern New Mexico and is known to be very loud and aggressive. Here Saint Francis gives the magpie a "talking to -- eyeball to eyeball." Indigenous plants are shown in the foreground.
