Saint Christopher
The myth of Saint Christopher tells of a giant of a man who longed to serve the mightiest master. Having disdained both satan and the king, he sought Christ. Living alone at the ford of a river, he helped to transport travelers to the other side. One night he was carrying a child across the river when the child became heavier and heavier, so heavy that the great man could hardly get across. "You have been carrying the weight of the world," said the child. "I am Jesus Christ, the King you seek." Christopher is believed to have been martyred in Asia Minor in the third century. A church in his honor was built in Chalcedon around 450. Saint Christopher is the patron of wayfarers, and now motorists. A caution among Catholics: exceed the speed limit and St. Chris jumps out of the car! His feast day is July 25. Click here for a detail image |
